The Advancing Infection Prevention and Control for Public Health Professionals learning pathway is designed specifically for public health professionals who have program management and supervisory responsibilities in infection protection and control. This pathway is a good match for you if you are looking to freshen up your skills in public health IPC or stepping into a managerial or supervisory role in IPC. Covering many of the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals, Racial Justice Competencies, and Essential Skills identified by IPC professionals, this pathway provides the fundamental knowledge and skills necessary to advance IPC public health professionals




Learning Objectives

By the end of this learning pathway, participants will be able to:

  • Apply key concepts in infectious disease epidemiology. 
  • Understand the interconnections of humans, animals and the environment in infectious diseases.
  • Describe the connection between leadership and system thinking for effective infection prevention and control.
  • Develop a concise written statement of the public/community health problem, issue, or policy under consideration in a measurable way.
  • Describe the elements for initial messages during an outbreak crisis.
  • Draft a one-minute message by outlining a narrative structure and using a frame element to communicate a public health idea to a non-expert. 
  • Package communications for infection prevention and control measures to the public.
  • Establish a process for developing a facility IPC risk assessment.
  • Identify criteria to select infection prevention and control health interventions and policies.
  • Explain how to obtain voluntary compliance with isolation and quarantine requirements. 
  • List the four dimensions of change readiness and how they can be applied to outbreak scenarios. 
  • Implement one professional goal related to promoting health and racial equity in IPC practice.
  • Recognize the signs and impacts of stigma for infectious diseases in health care and public settings.
  • Determine who are the community partners in public health literacy in preventing infectious disease spread.
